Smith Stimmel. As a bodyguard to President Abraham Lincoln, Sergeant Stimmel witnessed the most pivotal events of Lincoln’s first two years in office. Stimmel later settled in Fargo as a lawyer and served in the territory legislature helping lead North Dakota to statehood.
