FARGO — After six months of renovations, a second Beans Coffee Bar is ready to serve a new neighborhood.

The coffee shop, located at 2550 S. University Drive, opened Monday, April 4 in the building that was an A&W restaurant since the mid-1990s until it closed last fall.

"It was a huge transformation," said Heidi Holland, who owns Beans with her husband, Chris. "I'm actually really excited for people to see how different it looks."

The building got a fresh exterior look and a new outdoor patio that wraps around the front, in addition to a new interior after the space was gutted and rebuilt.

It now has a similar "contemporary and homey" vibe as the first Beans, which opened in November 2014 at 5675 26th Ave. S. in Fargo. But there are some differences, especially in the distinct neighborhoods and nearby businesses these two coffee shops aim to serve.

Holland said the University Drive location was attractive because the area didn't have many choices for drive-thru coffee. It's a convenient choice for the growing ranks of residents who live and work around there, she said.

"There's so much more growth that's south of us now, and a lot of people are going right down University to get downtown and to get to the freeway," she said.

But it's also a personal thing for the owners who both grew up in the neighborhood and wanted to add something to the area, Holland said.

Business has boomed for Beans since 2014, and she said she didn't expect this kind of success after launching in a community with plenty of coffee competition.

"We just have a lot of things that we've done differently, and I think it's a good different," she said. "We really support kids and moms and entrepreneurs, and we give refills when you're in here. Our mini doughnuts are kind of our signature item, too."

There's no firm plan yet, but Holland said there could eventually be more Beans in Fargo with enough space for private conference rooms. Neither Beans location right now has room to accommodate that, she said.

"We're hopeful that we'll have some more coming that'll be a little bit bigger," she said.
