Moorhead hotel owner says construction is to blame for recent closure
MOORHEAD—The Days Inn, 600 30th Ave. S., has closed. Owner Kabal Kirk blames closure on the Eighth Street and Interstate 94 construction project that cut off easy access to the property for most of the summer.
"Construction killed the summer. Usually, I make summer and spend money in the winter, but this summer I couldn't do it," he said.
He closed Nov. 17 after a deal to sell the 136-unit hotel to a local buyer fell through.
"We hoped he could buy it and keep the doors open, but he didn't do it," Kirk said. "On the 15th he didn't close and on the 16th he told us he couldn't do it. I had to close the property and walk away."
Kirk bought the hotel in 2012. It did well the first few years, but he admits he was struggling before the construction started.
He was forced to shut down the hotel's bar and restaurant several months ago due to property tax issues.
"I was hoping the summer goes good and I pay the property tax and get the liquor license back, but the construction killed everything," Kirk said.
