FARGO—A north Fargo pizza place is closing after 37 years in business, but not because of sluggish sales.
Happy Joe's Pizza & Ice Cream Parlor, 3132 Broadway, will close at the end of its regular business hours Sunday, April 30. The doors will be locked at 9 p.m., while the delivery cutoff is 10 p.m.
Mike Post owns the business with his wife, Cheryl. He said they've had to think about closing this restaurant every year, even as they and the the Iowa-based Happy Joe's franchise chain have tried to keep it open.
But it's become harder to fully staff the business while also keeping up at the south Fargo Happy Joe's, 2511 S. University Drive., in the midst of a workforce shortage.
"Our hands are so full at south Fargo, and I didn't have any supervisors or managers that I could move up there to cover it," he said.
Post and his wife have been involved with owning and operating the local Happy Joe's restaurants since 1981 and became the sole owners in 2013.
"We have our customers that have been there for years and are sad to see us go, and we're sad to go," he said.
Happy Joe's came to the community when Post's father opened the south Fargo eatery in 1977 and the north Fargo restaurant in 1980. Post, his wife and his father opened a West Fargo location, 1450 13th Ave. E., that closed in 2014 after a decade in business.
Post said all employees at the north Fargo restaurant can transfer to the south Fargo Happy Joe's if they want.
But the closure will affect the chain's local delivery territory. Post said he's still reconfiguring the boundaries for the south Fargo store, and customers can get the latest delivery information by looking up the restaurant on www.happyjoes.com.
Post plans to sell or lease the north Fargo building after Happy Joe's closes.
