FARGO—A Starbucks will open near North Dakota State University in time for the fall semester.
Roger Gilbertson, president of FM City Development, said the coffee shop will move into the west endcap unit of Bison Block, 1414 12th Ave. N. Construction is expected to start in the next two or three weeks.
It was reported in the fall of 2015 that a Starbucks would open there. But Gilbertson said the process to get approval from the company took a while to finalize, especially because this will be the community's first store operated by a franchisee, rather than a corporate-owned location.
He declined to name the local franchisee opening this store.
Gilbertson said the roughly 2,000-square-foot coffee shop should be open in time for the start of the fall semester, which begins Aug. 21. It won't have a drive-thru window, he said.
There are five Starbucks in the metro already, including two in Target stores in Fargo and Moorhead.
Gilbertson said this location will draw customers from campus as well as people in the area because it will be the only Starbucks north of 13th Avenue South in Fargo.
"That would also attract people on this side of Fargo," he said.
