FARGO—Get ready for a java jolt—Starbucks will more than double its number of coffeehouses here in the coming months.

The Seattle-based company that started in 1971 has been in town for years, opening its first store here, 4900 13th Ave. S., in 2004. Starbucks has since added two more corporate-owned stores to the community, one at 2511 Kirsten Lane S. near 32nd Avenue South and 25th Street South in Fargo and another at 906 Holiday Drive off Eighth Street South in Moorhead.

The brand also has licensed stores that aren't corporate-owned but serve the full range of Starbucks products at Target stores in Fargo and Moorhead. A new Starbucks counter opened earlier this year at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Fargo, 1635 42nd St. S.

But Starbucks will see its biggest local growth in physical footprint yet as three more coffeehouses open in Fargo this year, along with plans to possibly build a fourth one next year.

Todd Troyer said this boost is owed to a major change in Starbucks operations as the chain, which previously only allowed corporate-owned or licensed stores, opens itself up to franchising.

"Because they want to be growing more than they can afford to grow, they've started to franchise," said Troyer, director of operations for Fargo's First Call Hospitality Inc. that will manage two forthcoming stores here.

Opening plans

The newest Starbucks in Fargo is set to open Monday, Aug. 21, taking over a vacant space on the west end of the Bison Block building, 1414 12th Ave. N., just across from the North Dakota State University campus.

Troyer said that location will be managed by First Call Hospitality and is being franchised by Fargo-based 201 Hospitality LLP, an ownership group that bought Fargo's Holiday Inn and Radisson Hotel last year.

That group is also moving ahead on a franchised Starbucks in the former lobby bar of the Radisson Hotel, 201 5th St. N., with construction expected to start later this month and wrap up in time to open this November, according to Troyer.

Another new Starbucks, this one a standalone corporate-owned store located at 4480 26th Ave. S., is being built now just south of the Sonic Drive-In restaurant in south Fargo.

A spokesperson for Starbucks confirmed that coffeehouse, which will be the fourth corporate-owned store in the community, will have a drive-thru window. It's tentatively set to open sometime this winter.

Troyer said a third franchised Starbucks by 201 Hospitality is also being discussed, but those plans aren't finalized or approved yet. If the project goes through, construction could start as early as next spring on an addition to the southwest corner of the Holiday Inn, 3803 13th Ave. S., to build a Starbucks connected to the hotel.

He said these new franchised coffeehouses are meant to help the brand meet demand for its coffee and food while also adding locations to "underserved" areas, such as the downtown neighborhood of Radisson Hotel and the NDSU campus area.

"In talking with Starbucks, they really wanted to have more Starbucks obviously in the community," he said. "There just wasn't enough, and they were having a hard time meeting the demand with the stores they had."
