FARGO -- A mattress and bedding accessories business is setting up shop at the site of a former Lone Star Steakhouse here.

Mattress Firm took out building permits from the city of Fargo in recent weeks for a store at 4328 13th Ave. S., making it the first known tenant of a new building now under construction.

Franchise owner Jason Sellers said he expects the roughly 4,000-square-foot store will open sometime in 2018.

“We’ve been looking at Fargo for a few years, and nothing’s fit what was right for our company real estate-wise,” he said. “When this came up, we moved on it.”

Sellers, who became the North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota franchisee a few years ago, opened his first store in October 2014 in Bismarck. He now has three stores in Bismarck, two in Minot and one each in Williston and Dickinson.

He said he’s always looking for opportunities to open more locations of what he said is the largest mattress retailer in the world with more than 3,500 stores in America. Sellers said Mattress Firm is unique because it doesn’t sell furniture or handle couches, instead focusing exclusively on mattresses from national brands and its own private label.

The former Lone Star Steakhouse, which opened in July 1993 and closed in November 2016, was demolished this summer to make room for the new structure large enough to house three businesses.

The property was purchased earlier this year by Duemelands Commercial Real Estate in Bismarck. In August, CEO Jill Duemeland declined to identify possible tenants, but she said one of the units will have a drive-thru window.
