Josef's School of Hair Design cuts ties with downtown location after 57 years
FARGO—Josef's School of Hair Design is braiding its two Fargo campuses into a single operation that will make its home in the building that once was home to Straus Clothing.
The change is expected to take place by late spring, but that timetable is subject to change, according to Mikaela Balzum, school director.
"The facility will be new and centrally located and this will allow Josef's to offer all of its programs at one location to better educate and to take beauty and health professionals to the next level," Balzum said.
According to building permit information provided by the city, the address of the new location is 3223 13th Ave. S., space that was formerly the location of Straus Clothing before that store closed in 2015 when the owners retired.
Josef's now operates out of 627 NP Ave. in downtown Fargo and out of Josef's West Academy at 4501 15th Ave. S., which opened in 2007.
Balzum said the new, combined location on 13th Avenue will mean more parking and accessibility "for our loyal clients."
She acknowledged the change comes with a twinge of nostalgia for the school that Josef Olivieri founded 57 years ago.
Olivieri passed control of the school to the family of his son, Mario, a number of years ago.
"It's bittersweet leaving our roots downtown, but we are excited to evolve and continue serving the F-M community for another 57 years," Balzum said.
Balzum said the move will not affect Olivieri's Salon, which is next door to Josef's downtown campus.
"They're separate businesses," she said.
Building permit information filed with the city indicates Josef's is fitting up the space on Thirteenth Avenue as a salon with classrooms.
Josef's also has a Grand Forks campus.
