FARGO—A porch and decking supplies company will move into a larger facility this fall.
Mr. Spindle Inc., which currently operates out of three buildings at 5936 53rd Ave. S. in Fargo, will move into a new 24,000-square-foot facility at 4039 98th Ave. S. on Oct. 1.
President Bob Matthews said framing is underway on the new facility, with the total project expected to cost more than $2 million.
The move will give the company about 25 percent more space and state-of-the-art sprinkler systems that its current facility lacks.
But because Mr. Spindle also bought the adjoining 4-acre lot, Matthews said the company will have a total of 7.5 acres of land, giving it more room to expand as needed.
"We have about 70 percent more landmass to grow on, which is going to be a necessity here in the next year or two," he said.
The company currently employs 12 workers.
Matthews said his original company, American Cedar and Redwood, that he started in 1977 sold cedar and redwood to lumberyards and homeowners.
But a request from a Chicago client asking for a truckload of redwood-turned spindles for decking components—parts that no one else was making—prompted him to get a lathe and get into the manufacturing side of things in 1988.
Mr. Spindle's biggest customer is Menards, which offers about 100 of its products in its 300 or so stores. The company also supplies products to Home Depot and works with lumberyards and residents across the country.
