2 candidates file for Moorhead School Board

MOORHEAD – Two people have filed to vie for a seat on the Moorhead School Board in the Nov. 4 general election.

Karla Swenson, 2840 29th St. S., was the first candidate to file when the two-week filing period opened Tuesday.

Cassidy Bjorklund, 4405 10th St. S., filed Wednesday, school district spokeswoman Pam Gibb said.

Filing for the office closes at 5 p.m. Aug. 12.

The terms of board members Laurie Johnson, Bill Tomhave and Carol Ladwig expire at the end of the year.

Newly elected board members will be seated in January.

The board is composed of seven residents of Independent School District 152. They are elected at-large to four-year terms and are paid $800 per month.

Candidates must be at least 21 years old when their term begins. Also:

  • Candidates must be eligible voters and residents of the district for at least 30 days before the election.
  • Candidates cannot be registered as convicted sex offenders.
  • Candidates cannot file for another office in the Nov. 4 election.

Affidavits of candidacy are available in the superintendent’s office at Probstfield Center for Education, 2410 14th St. S. The filing fee is $2.

Helmut Schmidt
Helmut Schmidt was born in Germany, but grew up in the Twin Cities area, graduating from Park High School of Cottage Grove. After serving a tour in the U.S. Army, he attended the University of St. Thomas in St Paul, Minn., graduating in 1984 with a degree in journalism. He then worked at the Albert Lea (Minn.) Tribune and served as managing editor there for three years. He joined The Forum in October 1989, working as a copy editor until 2000. Since then, he has worked as a reporter on several beats, including education, Fargo city government, business and military affairs. He is currently The Forum's K-12 education reporter.
