FARGO – Once upon a time, it was exciting to develop a roll of film.

Now, with smartphones, most images stay in the digital world.

But I think that should change.

Tangible reminders of vacations, celebrations and other memories start conversations and lift moods.

Try out a printing app or website to see your digital images come to life.

1. Walgreens

App cost: Free.

For 39 cents, print square 4-by-4 Instagram photos from your phone using Walgreens’ free app.

Larger prints are available, too, and most photos are ready the same day they’re ordered.

Great for: Last-minute printing and basic photo projects.

2. InstaThis

App cost: No app available. Order through the website,

Print Instagram photos on aluminum, wood or coasters for fantastic gifts.

The custom wall art arrives ready to hang and prices range from $23 for a 6-by-6 aluminum print to $58 for a 12-by-12 wood print.

Great for: Gifts. Think wedding gifts and presents for the hard-to-buy-for people in your life.

Plus, the company has a 100-percent satisfaction guarantee.

3. Postagram

App cost: Free.

The mobile app allows users to send custom photo postcards (snail mail) for 99 cents to addresses in the U.S. and $1.99 for International addresses.

Users choose the photo and write their own message, too.

Great for: Travel. It can be daunting to find post offices in new cities and countries.

Postagram eliminates the guesswork and ensures that friends and family will receive a taste of your travels.

4. Sticky9/formerly Stickygram

App cost: No app available yet. Order from the website,

For $14.99, create a sheet of nine medium-size Instagram magnets.

The company also sells custom tablet cases, phone covers and magnet wall frames.

Great for: Inexpensive, thoughtful gifts that people can enjoy every time they open the fridge.

5. Printstagram

App: Free.

Note: The app is called Print Studio.

Among the many Instagram-focused print products, I like the photo strips (think photo booths) and mini prints best.

Mini prints look like old Polaroid photos, and a set of 48 is $15. Nine strips of photo booth-style prints are $10.

Great for: Throwback-style prints.
