Valley City police: Pickup hits 92-year-old in crosswalk; driver cited
VALLEY CITY – A pickup truck hit a 92-year-old woman in a crosswalk here Sunday evening, and she was airlifted to a Fargo hospital to be treated for her injuries, police said.
Rita Weber, a Valley City resident, remained hospitalized at Sanford Medical Center late Monday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said, adding that Weber’s family had asked that her condition not be made public.
The crash happened about 6:20 p.m. Sunday as Weber was crossing Sixth Street Northwest, said Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson.
Robert Mittleider, 32, was northbound on Central Avenue North when he turned left to go west on Sixth Street. For unknown reasons, he did not see Weber walking south in the crosswalk and struck her with his 1992 Ford F-150 pickup, Thompson said.
Weber was taken to Mercy Hospital in Valley City and was later airlifted to Sanford Medical Center, the chief said.
Mittleider, of Valley City, was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the collision, Thompson said.
The crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Valley City Police Department at (701) 845-3110.
