BISMARCK – Bobcat Co. on Tuesday celebrated the grand opening of an engineering facility that company President Rich Goldsbury said will allow the manufacturer of light construction equipment to build world-leading products into the future.

The two-story, $28 million Acceleration Center features 190,000 square feet of indoor space, including labs, classrooms and demonstration areas, and an additional 22 acres of outdoor test and product development space.

What the center doesn’t have is offices, which Goldsbury said is meant to build collaboration between engineers. A round room where employees can draw on the walls also is designed to spur innovation, he said.

The facility contains more than 100,000 square feet of test area, and equipment can be demonstrated indoors for customers and dealers year-round, Goldsbury said. Bobcat recently celebrated production of its one millionth loader.

“We have momentum,” Goldsbury said in a news release. “We are investing in our innovations and technologies, and in our facilities and our people.”

Located in south Bismarck’s Northern Plains Commerce Centre, the Acceleration Center will be home to 175 workers engaged in initial design, prototype engineering, prototype manufacturing, computer simulation and testing of ideas and concepts.

West Fargo-based Bobcat said the center will be a key engineering facility for its equipment and also will help serve some of the heavy-equipment research and development needs for its parent company, Doosan.

Bobcat, which employs about 2,000 people in North Dakota, broke ground on the Acceleration Center in May 2013.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple said in a news release that the state-of-the-art center “will serve to keep Bobcat at the forefront of innovation while supporting local jobs and creating economic opportunities for our state.”
