Bomb squad investigates suspicious package near Fargo courthouse

Fargo police were called at noon after someone called about the package. Police determined the package was suspicious and called the bomb squad.

There was suspicious writing on an envelope and rocks places on top of the package, police Lt. Joel Vettel said.

Vettel said the writing did not appear to be what would normally be on a letter, which is why it was determined to be suspicious.

The bomb squad used a bomb-detecting robot named Flip to inspect the package. After about an hour on scene, the bomb squad determined the package was safe to approach and removed it from the top of the mailbox.

Police are still trying to determine the contents of the package and who left it on the mailbox, Vettel said.

Police closed off a portion of Eighth Street and Third Avenue but cleared the area about 2:20 p.m.
