WEST FARGO – A fire that started in a home on the 100 block of 48th Ave. E. here while both residents were away threatened two dogs Thursday.

But neighbor Al Dudgeon saw smoke and went up the back stairs of the house to open the second-floor door and let them out, he said. Dudgeon also called 911 and the residents, not letting them know there was a fire but just telling them to come home immediately.

Dudgeon said if someone told him his house was on fire, he would freak out.

Police responded at about 4:30 p.m. and four fire trucks soon followed.

No injuries were reported and the fire was apparently limited to the garage area, Officer Jorge Gonzalez said.

No flames were visible, but the edge of the garage door was blackened. The two pets, meanwhile, frolicked in the home’s backyard.
