Forum editorial: Target stores on target with gun 'request'
Retailing giant Target is right on target by “respectfully requesting” gun owners not to bring guns into stores in so-called “open-carry” states. The company’s management understands that the open display of firearms in their family-friendly stores is not family friendly.
The company surely did its homework before acting. It is likely a significant majority of customers find the very idea of open display of guns in a retail store unsettling at best, abhorrent at worst. Target’s action is socially sensible and business-smart.
As for the gun nuts (an apt description for anyone who believes it’s necessary to brandish a rifle in the toy aisle of a retail store), let them take a lesson from Target, and understand that a private-sector business has a right within the law to control what happens on its property.
