In 1942 he was drafted into the US Army and was trained as a forward artillery observer, then shipped to Italy where he fought at Anzio during WWII. He was engaged in active combat 557 days. When the war ended he came home to find the farm rented to his younger brothers and his mother dying. She was 54. George found employment on farms in the Rogers - Leal area and met his future wife, Ruth McFadgen, at a dance in Rogers in 1946. They were married in 1948 and moved onto Ruth's family farm until 1952 when he and Ruth bought their own small farm 8 miles west of Fingal. With borrowed machinery from generous neighbors, they raised beef cattle, small grains and eight children there.

In 1972 they bought a farm in the valley by George's boyhood farmstead and he lived out his life in that valley.

His wife Ruth died in 2002, physically ending a 54-year love affair that began each morning with his singing and dancing with her in the kitchen and ended with long pillow talks at night. Hardships and great personal losses never hindered their happiness with each other, with their children or with the life they lived. George finally retired from farming with his son Pete when he turned 89.

He moved into Valley City's Elks Apartments where he has lived with his son and devoted caregiver Scott for the past three years. Despite a lifetime of hard work with little time for travel or service clubs, his only regret in life was that he could no longer work in his fields the last four springs.

George is survived by seven children: David (Deanna) Paulson, Fargo, ND; Mary (Earl) Pomeroy, Alexandria,VA; Nancy (Ron) Porzio, Maple Valley, WA; Pete (Lori) Paulson, Valley City, ND; Scott Paulson Valley City, ND; Dean (Mindy) Paulson, Anchorage, AK; and Amy (Kyle) Dougherty, Morris, MN; brother, Palmer Paulson, Valley City, ND; 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and very special friends Edna Maasjo, Valley City, ND, and Wayne Berglund, Grand Forks, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and three brothers; his wife Ruth and his son Neil who was killed in a military crash in 1975.

A prayer service will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church in Valley City with viewing from 5-7 and the service at 7. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Monday, August 18, at Epworth United Church in Valley City. Burial with military rites will be held Saturday, August 23, at 11:30 am at Getchell Zion Cemetery 9 miles north of Valley City.
