Every birthday deserves a cake, even if that birthday boy or girl is a 125-year-old state.
So on Aug. 16, residents from around the state will gather in Bismarck for a quasquicentennial shindig – a party worthy of a century and a quarter. It will be held on the Capitol grounds and will showcase the best of North Dakota with home-grown entertainment, food, fine arts and games.
We know you might not be able to make it, but there’s no reason you can’t hold a North Dakota birthday party all your own. Here’s where that cake comes in.
We’re asking readers to decorate a birthday cake in honor of North Dakota’s birthday.
What will you put on it? A buffalo? Fields of wheat? Lawrence Welk or Josh Duhamel? There’s a world of possibilities. The North Dakota sky is the limit.
All you need to do is email your name, address and a photo of you with your cake to tracy.briggs@
You will be judged on appearance alone (the cake’s, not yours). As much as it hurts me to say this, we will not be taste-testing these cakes. A panel of judges will pick the decorating worthy of winning. We will not be accepting photos through the mail, so get those emails to in by 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 3.
The winning entry will be my special guest Aug. 14 on “The Great Indoors” web broadcast, where you’ll show me how you decorated your cake. You must be available to shoot the video sometime Aug. 4-6.
Even if you don’t win the contest, the picture of you with your cake might appear in the Aug. 14 edition of The Forum.
And here’s the best part, Costco in West Fargo is throwing in some great prizes for the winner: a Kitchen Aid mixer and an Executive Costco Membership – a prize package worth $500.
For more details and to hear some cake decorating tips from Costco bakery manager Ryan Lynch, be sure to watch “The Great Indoors” video today on Inforum.com.
Good luck, and Happy Birthday, North Dakota!
