Hatton woman accused of texting, Facebooking during fatal crash appears in court
HILLSBORO, N.D. – A Hatton woman is out on her own recognizance after making her first court appearance on charges she killed a great-grandmother in a high-speed crash while texting and using Facebook in May.
Abby Elaine Sletten, 20, appeared with her attorney in Traill County District Court on Wednesday.
Sletten was charged last week with one count of Class C felony negligent homicide after prosecutors say she rear-ended an SUV at about 85 mph.
Court documents say the driver of the SUV was trying to make a U-turn on Interstate 29 ahead of Sletten at the time.
Phyllis Gordon, an 89-year-old from Ada, Minn., was dead at the scene.
Through her family, Sletten declined to comment.
