FARGO – Fresh herbs plucked straight from the ground (or a pot) are one of my favorite simple pleasures in the kitchen.
But I often can’t use my herbs as quickly as they grow. And for plants like basil, it’s essential to prune often so the leaves stay sweet and fragrant and don’t turn woody.
Keeping cut herbs fresh longer is easy with a storage tip from online cooking community site Food52.
Here’s what they suggest:
Soft herbs (like basil, parsley, cilantro, tarragon, mint and dill) can be snipped at the base of the stems and stored in a glass of water, like a bouquet of flowers.
Basil should be kept out at room temperature, but other soft herbs can be stored in the fridge with a plastic bag loosely covering the jar of water.
Store hard herbs (like thyme, rosemary, oregano and sage) in the crisper of a refrigerator wrapped in a damp paper towel and plastic wrap.
