Irene served as organist for her church congregation wherever she lived, and sang with or directed choirs since 1938. She sang and served as the assistant director of the "Megatones," a women's barbershop group in LaMoure. She and Bill loved to square dance. Irene was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church in LaMoure and very active in Presbyterian Women.
