John Bruce Wasson, age 81, died July 21, 2014, at his home in Medford, Oregon. He was born November 20, 1932, to John R. and Lucerne (Annis) Wasson in Barnum, Minnesota. He served two combat tours during the Korean War. During that war, under the direction of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, John was awarded the Silver Star for his heroic efforts to save his platoon from enemy fire. On July 10, 1953, he was leading his platoon on a patrol forward of the main line of resistance when they were attached by enemy forces which inflicted several casualties. His award stated that, "Although wounded by enemy grenade fragments, he bravely continued to redirect the patrol members until the foe had successfully been repelled. Refusing medical aid, he valiantly guided his men back to friendly positions."

After discharge, he enrolled in the University of Minnesota in 1954. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1959, with a Bachelor of Science in Science Education. He received a Master of Science degree in Counseling and Guidance in 1963, and a PhD in Educational Psychology in 1969. In June 1965, he married (Dr.) Barbara Bond, and together they sent 26 years in the Special Education Department of Moorhead State University (now Minnesota State University - Moorhead) until both retired in 1997.
