Letter: Elton John surely is no theologian
Elton John is a very good musician but a very bad theologian! (July 1 Variety page):
First, Jesus Christ is alive today. That’s why we celebrate Easter. He has risen from the dead. That’s why those who believe have hope.
Second, Hebrews 13:8 – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Sorry, no changing. Jesus didn’t form opinions based on polls from trends in current culture. He was never concerned about being politically correct, only about obedience to the Word of God, and always told the truth. Matthew 5:18 – “For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.”
Of course, many Old Testament laws have “disappeared” because Christ fulfilled them, but the moral and ethical laws remain the standard. Jesus never said that homosexuality would never happen. It was alive and well before his earthly time. He simply said it was a sin then and is a sin now. I know, “sin” is politically incorrect and judgmental.
Elton John is certainly not unique in his opinion. Even the “Christian Church” often agrees with him. As for me, as a sinful believer, I’m sticking with what Jesus says in Scripture. He has forgiven my sins through faith in the cross and called me to obedience.
And no, I am not a homophobe. I have gay relatives and friends.
