Letter: ND meal statistics are quite shocking
Have you ever heard local elected officials say our farmers feed the world? Then the irony of North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring’s comments in “ND gardeners encouraged to boost produce donations” (July 9) should be obvious. It is shocking to think that “about 1 in 10 North Dakota residents go without a meal every day.” And Goehring admits the sad fact that children “make up about 40 percent of that group.”
Thank you to the Hunger Free ND gardeners who have been growing 250,000 pounds of fresh produce for those in need.
Wouldn’t it be nice if our agricultural policy supported the farming of more fruits and vegetables for regional consumption instead of subsidizing only the cultivation of commodity crops for a global marketplace?
