Letter: Opening of mind basic for MSUM
I hear these days about needing to close down entire departments at Minnesota State University Moorhead and other such state-supported, low-cost universities. When I hear of these plans, it seems to me that we as a society are not valuing the very essence of what makes a democracy a democracy: an informed electorate and a way to achieve the American dream.
I hope some of those who are giving so much to private religious colleges will consider fully backing the funding of a place like MSUM, so that no more departments need to be shut down, and so that more people like me can experience the vast “opening of the mind” that higher education brings.
We do not want to devolve into a nation of haves and have-nots.
