Email

Mary Lou Almlie, 84, passed gently from this life to the next on May 31, 2014 at Trinity Center in Des Moines, IA.

The eldest of four children, Mary Lou was born to Palmer and Edna (Johnson) Merkins on January 2, 1930. Siblings Inez, June, and Earl completed the family. Mary Lou attended Climax-Shelly schools in MN. Following school, she met the dashing Marcus Almlie and they married in 1950. They became the proud parents of seven children.

Mary Lou was a wonderful Mom. Twice a week, the house was filled with the aroma of fresh-baked bread. She also provided delicious canned goods to be enjoyed throughout the long northern winters: beans, peas, corn, pickles, peaches, pears, strawberries, and crabapples.

She was no stranger to hard work. We dont know how she found the time with a family of seven kids, but Mary Lou also worked outside the home during the summers. She hoed sugar beets, worked at the ice cream shop in Halstad, and picked strawberries and potatoes.

Mary Lous memory is cherished by her children: Neal, Wanda (Robert Weisse), Wayne (Rachel Folkerts), Carmen (Reynold Martinez), Deborah (Bill Britt), Scott (Mary), and Barbara; her grandchildren: Natasha, Sabrina, and Sebastian Meza; Samuel and Larissa Weisse; Tyfany Roberts, Adam and Kate Heintzelman; and Liam Britt; her great-grandchildren: Quincy, Kyrian, and Avery; her sisters, Inez Tomten and June Domier; and many Almlie family members, friends, cousins, nieces and nephews. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother, Earl.

Her Bible was Mary Lous constant companion. In witness to her deep faith in God, we will gather for a memorial service at Liberty Lutheran Church of the Brethren, 1702 32nd Avenue S in Fargo, North Dakota on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 10 AM.
