Residents have reported getting threatening phone messages telling them they have problems with the IRS and could face arrest if they do not return the calls, according to a news release from Stenehjem’s office.

The calls appear to be a variation of the phishing scam, designed to trick people into revealing sensitive personal and financial information such as Social Security numbers and bank account or credit card information.

Those who receive the calls are urged not to respond and delete messages. Anyone with questions about suspicious voice messages or who has responded to the message can call the Consumer Protection Division toll-free at (800) 472-2600.
