Rick William Hartl

Rick William Hartl

Rick William Hartl passed away July 18 at Sanford Palliative Care Unit in Fargo following a long and brave battle with cancer. Rick, the youngest of four children, was born February 27, 1963 to Rodney and Marion Hartl who then lived and farmed near Alice, ND. The family moved to Enderlin, ND in 1972 to own and operate Maple Valley Locker. Rick graduated from Enderlin High School in 1981 and attended Valley City State University for a short time before enlisting in the Army. Rick married Terry Lewis in Sheldon, ND on August 2, 1986. They had two sons, Brandon and Dillion. Following military service, Rick moved back to Enderlin where he worked at the ADM-Northern Sunflower Processing Plant until health issues forced him to discontinue full-time work.

Rick loved to fish, garden, cook and play pinochle and poker. He had a particular passion for cooking all types of dishes and sharing them with friends and family. He also delighted sharing his fresh garden produce and the many canned items that came from his gardening. Working part-time at Maple Valley Locker gave him both a great sense of purpose and a social setting he truly relished. Rick enjoyed being around family and was the consummate tease that kids enjoyed.

Rick is survived by his mother Marion Hartl, Enderlin; son Brandon (Angel) Hartl, Fargo and son Dillon Hartl, Lisbon; son Wade Hartl, Jamestown, sister Nola (Gary) Jorgensen, Fargo; brothers Ronny (Chuckie) Hartl, Enderlin, and Kevin (Christy) Hartl, Enderlin; step-brother Eddie (Pattie) Morrow, Fargo; step-sisters Marna (Tom) Foster, Sperry, OK; Bonnie Sunderman, Haines City, FL; Leslie (Dale) Schneider, Shorewood, MN; Maryann (John) Richardson, Virginia Beach, VA; Germaine (Dean) Poindexter, Highlands Ranch, CO; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Some of Rick's final words were, "Tell everyone that I love them."

Rick was preceded in death by his father Rodney Hartl, step-father Ed Morrow and his grandparents.

Celebration of Life Service: Monday at 2 PM at Armstrong Funeral Home in Enderlin.
