Ross L. Smith, 70, Vergas, MN, died Sunday, July 27, 2014, at Essentia St. Mary's Health in Detroit Lakes. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, August 1, 2014, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Vergas, Reverend Robert Hinckley, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call 4:00 - 7:00 PM Thursday, July 31, 2014, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Vergas. The visitation will continue 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Ross Lee Smith was born November 7, 1943, in LaMoure, ND to Christ and Myrtle (Kankelfritz) Smith. He was raised and educated in Marion, ND and is a 1961 graduate of Marion High School. Ross was united in marriage to Peggy Lutchen, October 12, 1962 in Marion. They farmed the family farm near Marion until they divorced in 1969. He moved to Vergas, MN to be closer to his sister (Marge). He was united in marriage to Cathleen Dahring, November 4, 1973 in Detroit Lakes, MN. They later divorced . He was united in marriage to Terri Young, January 7, 2001 in Brainerd, MN. While in Vergas, he operated a dairy farm, a riding stable, raised live stock and worked as a building contractor.

He enjoyed being active in the Vergas Lions and all of the Lion's Club activities. He was also active in the area Farm Aid activities and was one of the organizers of the Farm Aid Tractorcade. He also enjoyed operating the Lion's bar at the Vergas Community Center, going to auctions, rodeos, bullriding and collecting antiques. He continues his support of the Lions by having donated his eyes to the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank.

Survivors include his wife, Terri of Vergas, children: Darren (Tracy) Smith of Winthrop Harbor, IL, Todd (Mary) Smith of Pleasant Prairie, WI, Carrie Smith of Moorhead, MN, Christa Larson of Argusville, ND, Ryan (Danielle) Smith of Minot, ND; 10 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and 1 on the way; a sister, Marge Wagner of Sauk Centre, MN; 2 brothers: Eugene "Jeep" (Audrey) Smith of Marion, ND and Don (Norma) Smith of Frazee, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen and 3 brothers: Ken, Henry and Ray. Furey Funeral Home is serving the family.
