Tyler Bossert paced the Deacons with a first-round 73 to sit in a tie for third place on a leaderboard dominated by area golfers.

Riley Johnson of West Fargo and Tanner Kretchman of Fargo Davies each shot 72s for first place after Day 1. Six of the top seven golfers are from Fargo and West Fargo schools.

Shanley had a team total of 300, which was five shots better than second-place Fargo Davies. West Fargo was in third place at 312 while Jamestown was in fourth at 314.

“I guess you could say we’re in the mix a little bit,” Jamestown coach Dean Kraft said. “We kind of played our way out of it near the end of the round. That was a little disappointing, I guess.”

East Region teams had won the previous nine state titles prior to last year, when Bismarck Century ended the West’s championship drought. The Patriots are at 328, putting them 28 shots back of first place heading into the second and final day of competition.

Team scores: Fargo Shanley 300, Fargo Davies 305, West Fargo 312, Jamestown 314, Minot 317, Fargo North 323, Grand Forks Red River 323, Bismarck St. Mary’s 327, Bismarck Century 328, Grand Forks Central 334, Mandan 341, Bismarck 347.
