Fargo - Downtown shoppers can cross another item off their wish list with the recent arrival of Broadway Shoe at 102 Broadway.

The store is connected to Your Day by Nicole, a bridal store also owned by Brittany Beauchene and Nicole Gruchow, and Halberstadt’s on Broadway, the men’s retailer owned by Beauchene’s father, Tim Halberstadt.

Beauchene said when they found out the space formerly home to Outermost Layer was available, they knew they wanted to take it over.

“We knew we wanted it right away because we love the open flow concept where it’s all connected and we can all work together,” Beauchene said.

That includes their husbands. Gruchow’s husband, Barry, is managing partner at Halberstadt’s and Beauchene’s husband, Travis, operates a shoeshine stand near the front of the store.

Beauchene took up the trade while pursuing a master in fine arts degree at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He operates the stand from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

‘It all fits’

Beauchene and Gruchow discussed several different ideas about what to do with the space before settling on a shoe store.

“It was my dad who said ‘What does every single person wear every single day?’ It’s shoes,” Beauchene said.

It just made sense, especially considering they have both always loved shoe shopping.

Gruchow said one of the best things about shoes is that everything fits.

“You don’t have to really worry about your shape or your body image,” Gruchow said. “It all fits.”

Beauchene said they also selected their inventory to fit all budgets.

She said the goal was to stock unique brands and styles not carried elsewhere in Fargo-Moorhead at all different price points.

“You don’t have to be super fashionable or super wealthy,” Beauchene said. “I feel we have something for everyone.”

Some of the most popular brands have been Frye, Cole Haan and Allen Edmonds.

They also carry a number of accessories including socks, bags and wallets.

Gruchow said business has been good since they opened June 27. She has especially enjoyed seeing all three businesses working together.

“People will come over in their dresses (from Your Day by Nicole) and grab shoes that match their dress. Same with the men. We’ve had a few guys come over (from Halberstadt’s) with their pants and ask what color shoes to get,” Beauchene said.
