Suspect charged in Becker County homicide
ST. PAUL — An Ogema woman has been charged with second degree murder and first degree manslaughter in last Friday's death of Richard Alan Baity of Ogema.
Jessica Marie Kilde, 33, of Ogema, appeared in Becker County District Court this morning, according to a news release from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Becker County Sheriff's Office and the White Earth Tribal Police Department are conducting the investigation.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call around 10 p.m. Friday of an individual who had been run over by a vehicle on 370th Street East in Ogema. They found Baity’s body on the road about 160 feet from his driveway at 33322 370th Street East.
According to the criminal complaint, injuries to Baity’s body and evidence at the scene indicated that he had been dragged to the scene. A broken portion of tie down strap located nearby appears to be consistent with ligature marks on Baity’s neck, the news release said. There were also drag marks extending back to Baity’s home. Kilde was observed driving toward the scene. The vehicle had a strap tied to the top of the door frame of the passenger side rear door that matched the strap located near Baity’s body.
The Becker County Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case against Kilde. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
According to a March 2011 Detroit Lakes Tribune story, Kilde, then of Crosby, was accused of stealing several checks from her former boyfriend's Ogema home between October 2010 and January 2011. She was accused of offering those checks, with forged signatures, to purchase more than $341 in goods and services at multiple Detroit Lakes area businesses.
Ogema is about 60 miles northeast of Fargo-Moorhead.
