Wahpeton shuts out Casseton in ND Class 1A state Legion tournament play
WAHPETON, N.D. – Wahpeton’s bats woke up in a big way Thursday night at John Randall Field.
The offensive explosion was welcomed after Wahpeton played a tight one-run game against Velva on Wednesday night. Only five hits were recorded in that game.
“Wednesday night’s game was a lot closer than we would have liked,” Wahpeton second baseman Ethan Meide said. “This game, we wanted to get out ahead early and put the pressure on them.”
Meide was 2-for-3 with two doubles, five RBIs, a walk and a run scored.
Wahpeton plated one run in the first inning and added two more in the second when Meide connected for one of his doubles that scored Brock Lingen and Aaron Mennis.
Casselton could not match the run production, but had plenty of chances to do so.
In the top of the first inning Casselton had a runner thrown out at home plate by Wahpeton center fielder Tyler Gripentrog. Two innings later, another Casselton runner was gunned down at the plate, this time left fielder Kameron McNary provided the outfield assist.
“It was difficult to push runs across on them,” Casselton head coach Logan Midthun said. “Two different times we had runners thrown out at home, and it was just some bad breaks. It would have been nice to score a few runs early so we would have been more relaxed. Instead we were tight and forced things.”
Gripentrog was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored for Wahpeton.
Wahpeton starting pitcher Nate Albrecht posted seven strikeouts and scattered five hits to earn the complete-game shutout.
“We have a pretty deep pitching staff and when our starters go deep into games it is very big for the team,” Meide said.
Casselton’s Ryan Nelson finished 2-for-3.
Wahpeton plays Valley City at 7 p.m. and Casselton plays Beulah in an elimination game at 1 p.m. Both games are today.
