Walter Johanson, 81, New Rockford, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, in his home.

Mr. Johanson was born Nov. 13, 1920, near Wolford, N.D., where he grew up and attended school. He moved with his family to Churchs Ferry, N.D. In 1941, he entered the U.S. Navy. He married Fern Stein Nov. 28, 1942, in Devils Lake, N.D. After his military discharge in 1943 they farmed near Churchs Ferry. In 1949 they moved to Oberon, N.D., where they farmed. She died in 1973. After retiring he moved to New Rockford and worked as a salesman for Midway Implement Inc. On Nov. 3, 1974, he married Marilyn Olson in New Rockford. After retiring in 1983 he worked as a groundskeeper at the New Rockford Golf Club until 1994.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Frank (Deloris), Devils Lake; a daughter, Rhoda Westby, Oberon; a stepson, Larry Olson, Sterling, Alaska; a stepdaughter, Linda (Don) Evenson, Vancouver, Wash.; a brother, Harfred (Alice), Webster, N.D.; four sisters, Hjordis Scheets, Shakopee, Minn., Agnes Glass, Westminster, Colo., Ruth Stein, Devils Lake, Lorna (Don) Ellefson, Fargo; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Today from 9-5, Sunday from 9-6:30, with a prayer service at 6:30, and Monday from 9-noon in Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.

Funeral: Monday at 2 in First Lutheran Church, New Rockford.

Burial: Prairie Home Cemetery, New Rockford.
