Jean Martha Howie Douglas

Jean Martha Howie was born Jan. 17, 1907, in Craigbank, Sheddens, Scotland. In 1909 she came to the USA, graduating from Fargo (ND) Central High School in 1926. She received teaching credentials from Moorhead (MN) State Teacher's College in 1928. Jean taught school in Enderlin and Havana, ND, and then in Circle, MT, until her marriage on Aug. 17, 1937, to John Birdseye Douglas in Fargo.

In 1925 Jean became an active member of the First Congregational Church. She was a dedicated Sunday School teacher for over 43 years, during which time she organized the Christmas pageant and served as superintendent of the primary school. She spent 23 summers at the church's camp, Pilgrim Park. Her husband, John, who helped organize the Crop Walk for the hungry in Bismarck, N.D., over 30 years ago and in Fargo in 1982, was very dear to her. John died in 1984. Jean participated in the Crop Walk every year until 1998 when her health started failing at the young age of 91. She was also a member of PEO.

In 1991, at the 18th General Synod of the United Church of Christ held in Norfolk, VA, Jean was honored "for her service and leadership in both church and society."

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Rev. Robert Howie (1920) and Mary Banks Gibb Howie (1921, Regan, ND); a brother, Robert; and three sisters, Agnes Howie Gustafson, Anne Howie Bergeson, and Mary Ellen Howie.

She is survived by three loving nephews and one niece, Arnold Gustafson, Slidell, LA, Robert Howie, San Mateo, CA, Cleve Howie, Lansing, MI, and Jan Howie Northrup, Larchmont, NY.
