ST. PAUL – Mark Wychor thought he had done his best wrestling of his life at last weekend’s section tournament.

He was wrong.

Wychor upped the ante on Thursday, earning a spot in the 215-pound semifinals at the Minnesota state wrestling tournament at Xcel Energy Center.

The junior scored a takedown as time expired for a

5-3 decision over Albert Lea’s Ethan Reed to advance.

“I was exhausted, so I did not want overtime,” Wychor said. “I saw there was 16 seconds left, and I said, ‘I gotta end this now.’”

Wychor (28-14) will take on Joseph Borchardt of Maple Grove in today’s semifinals. Borchardt (33-10) is also unranked, but knocked off fifth-ranked Zane Peterson of Lakeville South with a 6-4 decision.

“It doesn’t matter who it is, because I have a lot of confidence right now,” Wychor said. “I feel like I can wrestle with anybody.”

At 152 pounds, Moorhead’s Ben Gaughan was leading Tartan’s Troy Morisette for the bulk of the match, but the 10th-ranked Morisette turned the tables and scored a pin at the 5 minute, 9 second mark.

Class 1A

New York Mills landed three in today’s semifinals, but Myrone Bell was the nicest surprise.

Bell used a nice throw in the third period to pin a shocked second-ranked Paul Norgren of Maple River in 5:19 at 125.

“I throw a lot, and I was waiting for that one the whole match,” Bell said. “That does a lot for the confidence. If I can do that against (Norgren), I can wrestle with anybody here.”

Shane Novak (103) and Jordan Novak (135) also advanced for the Eagles.

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton’s Shawn Johnson advanced to the semifinals with a 4-2 win over New Richland-HEG’s Colton Schlaak, but Johnson’s pair of teammates weren’t as fortunate.

At 189, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg’s Joel Bauman downed Tayler Yliniemi 3-1 in overtime. Bauman and Yliniemi were ranked 1-2 at 189, respectively.

D-G-F’s Logan Rinke lost a 5-3 decision to Blue Earth Area’s Jake Lee at 285.

Pelican Rapids landed two in the semifinals in Tyler Wilson (171) and McKale Evenson (215).

Frazee’s Cody Nunn also got into the 171-pound semifinals, but Mike Lucero was upended at 140 by Parkers Prairie’s Jason Arvidson with a 3-2 decision.

Class 2A

For the last four months, Fergus Falls’ Josh Campion and Colton Thorson have spent extra time in the weight room after practice each day.

The rest of the state is starting to feel it.

Thorson and Campion both qualified for the semifinals on Thursday at 215 and 285, respectively.

“When you spend that much time together, you feel like family,” Campion said. “I want us both to do it.”

Campion is the top-ranked wrestler at 285, while Thorson is ranked third at 215.

Nic Harrison of Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus also moved on, making it to the semis at 135 with a 6-2 decision over Windom Area-MLBO’s Sam Fischenich.

It was a rough day for Perham. After losing to Foley in the team quarterfinals in the morning, all five of the Yellow Jackets’ quarterfinalists lost in Thursday night’s individual session.
