Through the 2009 Stimulus Package, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has made available up to $145 million to eligible landowners through the floodplain easement component of its Emergency Watershed Program.

The program, which is administered by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, allows the NRCS to purchase easements on lands damaged by flooding.

The restored floodplain will generate many public benefits, such as increased flood protection, enhanced fish and wildlife habitat, and improved water quality.

All of North Dakota’s watersheds are eligible to compete nationally for the easements.

Selections will be based on economic and environmental benefits per federal dollar spent.

Applications will be accepted until Friday. For more information, call the North Dakota NRCS office at (800) 774-5272.
