FLOOD UPDATE: Moorhead, Dilworth need more sandbaggers

Moorhead officials are asking for more volunteer sandbaggers, and the city of Dilworth could use volunteers as well.

By: Staff report, INFORUM

Moorhead officials are asking for more volunteer sandbaggers, and the city of Dilworth could use volunteers as well.

About 250 vounteers turned out at Minnesota State Community and Technical College-Moorhead this morning to help fill sandbags, but officials there say they could use another 250 volunteers. Volunteers should report to the college, park on the south side and register as a volunteer inside.

Dilworth also could use sandbaggers. Those wishing to volunteer there should report to the old Wal-Mart parking lot in Dilworth and they will be shuttled to the sandbagging location.

I know from personal experience Gary that the sandbags filled at the Fargodome went to all areas in need. I saw the conveys, with police escorts leave the Fargodome and go straight into Moorhead to Rivershore drive and other areas in need. I was one of the students at MSUM who had to leave and all I can say is I am sorry. I spent five days out there helping before having to stop because of my girlfriend being evacuated and I needed to help her. Then I ended up being told to leave the school so that made it worse. I would be out there now helping had I not of hurt myself to the point where I need to stop. I hope all goes well and I wish all the volunteers the best of luck,

Part of the reason they sent the college students home is so that there would be less water and sewer used in the city. Concordia is in the evacuation area, so they had no choice.

I have been to the MSCTC this week and have been sandbagging. It has gotten better as the week has gone on. Last sunday, the first day we helped, we had the cone system to fill sandbags at the homes we were helping down on Rivershore Drive in south Moorhead.. We didn't have them at first at the Tech College. They had them the last couple days I was there. We were really piling up the bags on the pallets. Could it have been done better right away? Sure, but the job got done and is continuing to get done. Did we get the same amount of media coverage standing out in the elements? No, but we didn't need it either. As long as the job is getting done, that is all that matters. God bless all who have been affected in one way or another, from their homes, to jobs, to the volunteers!
