Joint teams of local, state and federal officials are starting to conduct preliminary damage assessments of homes and businesses in the region, a step that starts the process of making assistance available to individuals.

In Cass County, for example, the assessments are expected to start by Saturday, said Jerry DeFelice, a spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. DeFelice said the damage data collected will be given to state officials, who will then request that individual assistance be approved by FEMA and the White House.

Cass County residents who feel they may have damage that qualifies them for individual assistance can call Frank Klein, Cass County director of tax equalization, at (701) 241-5617 to be placed on a list.

Fargo residents are asked to call the city assessor’s office at (701) 241-1340, and to save receipts for repair work and to take photos of damages.

Residents of Moorhead and Clay County can call (218) 477-4747 to have their home included in the preliminary assessment.
