Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker will make good on an off-the-cuff promise he made during the flood fight.
He’s buying everyone a beer now that it’s over.
Well, at least for 9,000 people.
Walaker will hand out 9,000 “Dennis Dollars” this week that can be redeemed for a 16-ounce glass of Miller Lite at The Hub at 2525 9th Ave. S.W.
But the mayor is not picking up the tab.
Miller Lite contacted Walaker and offered to donate the beer.
Walaker will distribute the laminated dollar bills with his face on them Thursday at a downtown post-flood celebration and Saturday at a party at the Fargodome hosted by the Fargo Marathon organizers.
The coupons are good Saturday through May 16.
“This is for what everybody’s done,” Walaker said. “We need to put a smile on everybody’s face.”
After May 16, if people want a Dennis Dollar as a keepsake, they can pick one up at The Hub, said Andrea Munson, director of marketing and promotions.
Walaker said it was important for him to make sure giving out free beers could be controlled.
“There may be some gray area about encouraging people to drink, but that’s not what this is,” said Walaker, who serves on Fargo’s Liquor Control Board. “This is one beer. All anyone is going to get is one of these bucks.”
Thursday’s party is from 5 to 11 p.m. at the US Bank Plaza. Saturday’s party is at 6 p.m. at the Fargodome. Both are free.
When Walaker made his now-famous quip, he didn’t think people would take him this seriously.
“It was important at that period time to interject just a little bit of humor here and there,” Walaker said. “I honestly didn’t think it was going to go to this end.”
