Fast food review: KFC’s grilled chicken lacks punch
It’s easy to think fast-food fried chicken tastes great while you eat it. But wait about an hour and your digestive process might change that opinion. At least, that’s how it is for me. Whether the chicken is doled out by KFC, Popeye’s or, back in the day, Hardee’s, it always tastes good in the moment only to later turn into a gutbomb churning and churning in the belly without exploding.By: Robert Morast, INFORUM
It’s easy to think fast- food fried chicken tastes great while you eat it. But wait about an hour and your digestive process might change that opinion.
At least, that’s how it is for me. Whether the chicken is doled out by KFC, Popeye’s or, back in the day, Hardee’s, it always tastes good in the moment only to later turn into a gutbomb churning and churning in the belly without exploding.
Naturally, when KFC announced its plan for grilled chicken, my belly was curious and hopeful. I wasn’t the only one. KFC restaurants across the nation reported long lines of people waiting for the latest version of Col. Sanders’ famous chicken.
No doubt, part of the allure is the grilled chicken’s newness. But there’s also the promise that this grilled fare is more healthy than the fried, crispy chicken KFC became known for – indeed, a grilled drumstick has 35 calories from fat while an original recipe drumstick has 60.
That’s great for healthniks. But how does it taste?
Not bad.
Despite smelling like it was harvested from a gas station warm plate, KFC’s grilled chicken is nonoffensive. The skin is crispy while the meat maintains its moistness. The pieces still carry the signature taste of the Colonel’s “secret recipe.” And the lack of a fried husk of breading and seasoning means your gut won’t be flooded with grease and fat.
But that’s also the problem. It’s just OK.
While the Colonel’s original recipe and extra-crispy chicken can make a punching bag of your stomach, the discomfort was – usually – worth it because the stuff tasted so dang good on the way down.
KFC’s grilled chicken is fine, but it’s not overpoweringly good – in any way. That’s a positive for health nuts. But if you want taste, stick with the Colonel’s original recipe.
