Fargo’s Hector International Airport had its busiest month ever in July.
A record 36,072 passengers boarded flights offered by Northwest, United Express, Delta Connection, Allegiant Air and Frontier.
That topped the previous record of 32,385 set in July 2008.
July traditionally is the busiest month for U.S. airports.
Hector has set monthly boarding records in 10 of the past 12 months.
That reflects increased air service offered at Hector over the past year, said Shawn Dobberstein, the airport’s executive director.
The region’s relatively healthy economy also has helped, he said.
“We’ve had great support from the business community,” he said.
Dobberstein said he began working at the airport in 1991, when monthly boardings typically averaged 13,000 to 17,000.
At the time, airport officials wondered if monthly boardings would ever top 20,000.
That happened for the first time in 1992, although it wasn’t until 2003 that monthly boardings regularly began topping the 20,000 mark, according to information supplied by Hector.
Boardings have continued to rise, topping 30,000 for the first time in July 2006.
“We keep reaching new milestones,” Dobberstein said.
He said it’s difficult to predict the number of future boardings at Hector.
“I’ve been surprised before. Anything is possible,” he said.
