VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Barnes County health officials haven’t received any more reports of scabies in Valley City since reports last week led to a news release to the community.

Scabies is a skin infestation caused by the microscopic human itch mite that causes itching symptoms. It is spread by close, direct contact and can be treated with prescription lotion.

Barnes County Public Health Director Theresa Will said she hasn’t received any more reports, which likely means the situation has cleared up.

“It must be controlled because we’re not hearing anything,” she said.

A confirmed case of scabies at the Sheyenne Care Center earlier this month led to a complete cleansing of the facility, which houses 170 residents. CEO Craig Christensen said this week he also believes the problem has been resolved.

“We’ve cleaned everybody; we’ve treated everybody,” Christensen said. “There’s no resemblance of anything being around anymore.”
