BISMARCK, N.D. — A man from northwestern North Dakota was the state’s first H1N1-flu related death, state health officials announced today.

The man was older than 60 years old and had underlying medical conditions, according to the North Dakota Health Department.

State health officials would not release any further details, so as to protect the privacy of the individual.

“This loss should remind all of us that influenza, whether seasonal or H1N1, can be a serious illness for some people,” Dr. Terry Dwelle, the state health officer, said in a statement.

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the number of H1N1-related deaths had surpassed 1,000 in the nation.
