Students kick off third annual Fill the Dome

FARGO - Every year, the Fill the Dome food drive gets bigger. And this year is no exception.

Every year, the Fill the Dome food drive gets bigger. And this year is no exception.

Area students aim to raise $75,000 and 75 tons of food this year for the third annual fundraiser. But besides beating their efforts last year, students are going one step further: creating awareness.

Organizers hope to gather 7,500 signatures of awareness, which they’ll present to the North Dakota Legislature, urging policymakers to help solve hunger issues.

“It needs to change,” Fargo South High School senior Evan Bong said Thursday. “We want the community members to realize that we’re doing this for a cause and that this is a real issue within Fargo-Moorhead; people do go hungry and we need to stop it.”

About a dozen student organizers announced their goal and start of this year’s campaign at a press conference today.

This weekend, students will trade candy for cans as they go “trick-or-canning” for canned food items. They’ll be collecting food items and money until Nov. 23.
