Dr. Neil A. Macdonald August 1920 - November 2009 Resident of Sheyenne Care Center passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2009 after a short illness.

He was one of four children born to the late Dr. A.C. and Mabel Macdonald and was the beloved husband of Betty (Rutherford) for over 63 years, who preceded him in death. Neil is survived by two loving daughters; Loree Macintosh (Scott) and Jodee Gruebele (Keith). Along with five treasured grandchildren Tark Katzenmeyer, Kelsee Macintosh, Daniel Macintosh (Erica), Alexander Server, and Ryan Server. He is also survived by a devoted sister, M.J. Scott, one sister-in-law, Geraldine Frost (Lee), and numerous nieces, nephews, and their children.

Following high school, Neil pursued an undergraduate degree from the University of North Dakota. He then went on to play 2 years of semi-pro hockey with the Wichita Industrial League before continuing on to medical school at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Upon completing medical school the next two years were dedicated to active duty in the Army, stationed at Heidelberg, Germany. As a veteran of WWII, and serving in the Army between 1942 and 1949, Neil was awarded numerous medals including the Victory and Good Conduct Medals. The end of active duty turned into 40 years of service with the Army National Guard where he retired as a Colonel.

Once home from Germany and active military duty he was able to begin his medical practice which included many years of sharing a clinic with his father, Dr. A.C. Macdonald. His years of serving as a physician and surgeon between 1949 and 1987 included; “house calls”, numerous years as Barnes County Coroner, 8 years on the ND Board of Medical Examiners, Board of Directors for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and not nearly enough time for the things he enjoyed most.

His passion was golf and he succeeded in being the Valley City Club Champion several times. Along with golf he loved to hunt, fish, and bowl, all of which he was quite accomplished.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Sunday, November 22nd, 2009, 2:30pm at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Valley City. Lerud-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.
