BISMARCK, N.D. -- North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem is applauding the withdrawal of a provision in federal health-care legislation that exempted Nebraska from paying some extra Medicaid costs.

Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson got the language written into the bill. It drew objections from attorneys general in more than a dozen states, and on Friday Nelson said he wanted the provision stripped out.

Stenehjem says keeping Nelson's language would have required the other 49 states to pay for Nebraska's increased costs for medical treatment for the poor and elderly. He and other attorneys general said the provision was unconstitutional.
