Here’s how to participate in Denny’s Bucks for Bags sandbag-making program in Fargo:

The program is open to all nonprofit organizations, church groups, and recognized school clubs and teams at area high schools, colleges and universities. Each group must have been in existence as of Jan. 1 and must register in advance.

The Fargo city administrator will have final say over whether a group fits the program’s parameters.

Bucks for Bags is not limited to Fargo organizations. Groups from outside the city can also participate.

Individuals can ask that their volunteer hours be credited to the group of their choice.

  • The program provides $75 for every 100 hours of volunteer work.

  • Any organization that contributes 500 hours or more will get a $50 bonus.

For example, a group providing 500 hours of sandbag-filling will get $425 from the city. Payments are for whole 100-hour increments only and will not be pro-rated.

  • Contributions to high school teams or organizations will be made to the school, or school district, and the school will administer or distribute the funds to the school organization.

  • Eligible organizations will be grouped in categories by number of members:

Category A: 15 or fewer members.

    Category B: 16 to 30 members.

    Category C: 31 to 50 members.

    Category D: 51 to 75 members.

Category E: 76 or more members.

The organization in each category with the highest sandbag-filling hours gets a $100 bonus.

  • Groups of five or more are asked to call FirstLink at (701) 476-4000 to coordinate times when their efforts can best be put to use.

  • Volunteers are asked to go the Coliseum at 807 17th Ave. N., Fargo, starting at 8 a.m. Monday. Buses will run every half hour from there to “Sandbag Central,” which is the Garbage Utility building at 2301 8th Ave. N.

  • Sandbagging will take place 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The effort is planned until St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, or until 1 million sandbags have been made.

  • Sandbaggers are urged to dress for the weather and bring their own gloves.

The Red Cross and Salvation Army will coordinate providing food and beverages to volunteers.
