A prominent voice in area flood prevention plans died this morning on his way back to the Fargo area to prepare for this year’s flood.

Dick “R.D.” Knutson, 64, suffered a fatal heart attack this morning while waiting to board a train in San Diego, said his friend Don Rudnick, the former Cass County sheriff.

Knutson, a former mayor of Briarwood, N.D., just south of Fargo was also vocal in politics and public school issues and an occasional host on area radio shows.

In the 1960s he made a name for himself as a concert promoter. In 2002 he brought Ray Charles to the Fargodome for a holiday concert.
