There’s a new burger joint in town.
Virginia-based Five Guys Burgers and Fries has opened in south Fargo.
Rob Hanson of Grand Forks and Travis Gamble of Augusta, Georgia, opened the quick-service, sit-down restaurant at 2877 45th St. S.
The menu is simple. Five Guys offers burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese, veggie sandwiches, fries and Coke products.
But, according to the company Web site, there are more than 250,000 possible ways to order a burger at Five Guys.
Cheeseburgers and bacon cheeseburgers are a little extra, but all other toppings are free. Toppings include: mayo, relish, onions, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, jalapeno peppers, green peppers, A-1 sauce, barbecue sauce and hot sauce.
Five Guys cooks with fresh ground beef and vegetables. The patties are hand-formed and nothing is frozen, said Mike Srnsky of West Fargo, Five Guys general manager.
“You can just taste the quality,” Srnsky said. “It’s juicier. It’s better tasting. We don’t have fillers or preservatives in our beef.”
Five Guys fries are cut fresh each day, soaked to remove the starch, and cooked in peanut oil.
Free peanuts are available for customers when they enter the store.
The Fargo restaurant, which can seat 85 people, opened March 29.
“We’ve had tremendous feedback so far, and we’ve been busy,” Hanson said. “It’s hard to find great burgers nowadays, and we’re just trying to fill that niche.”
Five Guys went through 30 50-pound bags of potatoes Saturday, Hanson said.
Srnsky said sales are increasing, even with construction on 45th Street.
“We’re busy all day long,” he said.
Brent and Laura Hanson of West Fargo said they love the new restaurant.
“It’s fast and you get a lot of food for your money,” Laura Hanson said.
Brent Hanson said he likes being able to personalize the toppings and he was surprised by how good the hot dogs tasted.
According to the Web site, Five Guys opened its first store in Arlington, Virginia, in 1986 and now has more than 550 stores in 35 states with plans to open 200 restaurants this year.
Rob Hanson and Gamble own territorial franchise rights in North Dakota and plan to open more Five Guys restaurants over the next few years, Hanson said.
The Fargo shop has 42 employees, and the business is still hiring.
